Joseph Schooling, Singapore

HIS STORY

Date of birth: 16 June 1995

Nationality: Singaporean

HIS SPORT IMPOSSIBLE

The Schooling family are no strangers to elite sports. Joseph's granduncle and father both represented Singapore at the Olympic Games, but he has taken the family's sporting success to a whole new level.

In 2016, he became Singapore's first-ever medallist at an Olympic Games, where he won gold in the men's 100m butterfly in Rio de Janeiro.

Joseph may have achieved one of his biggest goals as an athlete, but he knows that there is more work to be done for his community. That's why he is an active champion of road safety and an advocate for safety awareness and education for children.

Joseph knows that the path to safer roads, like the path to sporting success, begins from an early age. Toyota also understands the need for greater road safety awareness. That’s why together, we are working toward creating safer roads for all Singaporeans.

The biggest challenge when I started out, was that I didn't even know there were big opportunities for me to swim competitively.

Toh Wei Soong, Singapore

HIS STORY

HIS SPORT IMPOSSIBLE

Despite his disability, Wei Soong went to a regular school where he was treated like everyone else. It taught him a big life lesson on the importance of equality and it instilled values in him that he applies both to sports and life beyond the pool.

In 2015, he won three gold medals at the ASEAN Para Games in front of his home crowd and recently won bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia.

Wei Soong was diagnosed with the rare condition of transverse myelitis at the age of two. So, when Wei Soong first began swimming, he had no idea that he might one day be swimming for his country on an international stage.

When Wei Soong is not pushing for wins in the pool, he aims to push away stigmas together with Toyota. By creating greater awareness of the disabled and showing their potential, he aims to bring about change through greater equality across Singapore.

Abdul Latif Romly, Malaysia

HIS STORY

Date of birth: 31 March 1997

Nationality: Malaysian

Sport: Athletics (Long Jump)

HIS SPORT IMPOSSIBLE

What’s better than breaking a world record? Breaking it three times on the same day. Latif accomplished this at the Paralympic Games Rio 2016 and took home gold in the T20 long jump.

Before this amazing feat, Latif set a record at the 2015 Asian Para Games in Singapore, and most recently, he pulled off another record-breaking victory at the 2018 Asian Para Games – cementing his place in para-athletics history.

HIS SOCIAL IMPOSSIBLE

Beyond the track, Latif is aiming to help disadvantaged youths achieve more through literacy programs in his community.

Having experienced academic struggles at school in the past, Latif is an ideal advocate for extra learning programs and a great role model for youths in similar situations. Together with Toyota, this long jump Paralympian is leaping at the opportunity to improve literacy levels among those who are struggling in learning.

Amit Kumar Saroha, India

HIS STORY

Sport: Athletics (Club Throw / Discus Throw)

Amit was playing hockey at a national level before a car accident put a halt to his sport. Rather than give up on his athletic career, he pivoted to discus and club throw and has since won major awards.

In his first major appearance at the 2010 Asian Para Games Guangzhou, he won silver in the discus event. He then went on to win gold in the 2014 Asian Para Games in Seoul, and silver with his Asian-record breaking throw at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championship.

Amit uses his story to inspire others and show that in life, every negative can be turned into a positive.

Aside from winning championships, he is an advocate for safer driving and greater awareness on the road. He believes that if people are more aware of road safety, there will be a significant, positive change. Anchaya Ketkeaw, Thailand

HER STORY

Date of birth: 29 June 1998

HER SPORT IMPOSSIBLE

To say that Anchaya is a fighter would be an understatement. This determined Paralympic swimmer won the women’s 200m individual medley at the ASEAN Para Games when she was just 15 years old. And that was just one of her seven golds in the pool, making Anchaya the most successful athlete of the games.

Adding to her accolades, she was named the 2013 Female Para Athlete of the Year by the Sports Writers’ Association of Thailand and in 2017, she set a record in the Class S9 women’s 100m freestyle.

HER SOCIAL IMPOSSIBLE

Throughout her formative years, Anchaya was belittled and taunted by bullies and told that she could not, she should not, and she would not. But thanks to her unflinching nature, she proved them wrong and become a para-swimming champion for her nation.

While she continues to defy the impossible in the pool, she is working with Toyota to fight back against prejudices and give a voice to other victims of bullying.

Dipa Karmakar, India

HER STORY

Dipa has seen a lot of firsts in her career. In 2014, she became the first Indian gymnast to win a medal at a Commonwealth Games. She then became the first female Indian gymnast to compete at an Olympic Games in Rio 2016.

Even more impressively, she is the only Indian gymnast and only one of five in the world to have successfully landed the Produnova — the most difficult vault in women's gymnastics.

Dipa knows that her feats in the stadium can influence and inspire others to realise their full potential. She recognises the importance of being active, healthy, and mobile, and so she practices and competes not only for herself but for the youth of her nation.

Ernie Gawilan, Philippines

Ernie was scouted by a coach while struggling to teach himself to swim in the sea. Within few years, he found himself in second place at the Philippine Olympic Festival.

He then went from success to success, winning three bronze medals at the 2014 Asian Para Games and gold at the 2015 ASEAN Para Games. In the most recent Asian Para Games held in 2018, he won two gold and three silver medals.

Ernie understands the importance of water for his community’s wellbeing and his life experience has shown him that a little help can go a long way.

The love for badminton runs in Marcus’ veins — his father was a national champion. That’s why it is no surprise that with passion and hard work, Marcus found sporting success too.

His accolades include gold and silver in doubles at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, the doubles championship at the 2017 All England Open Super Series Premier, and most recently, doubles gold at the 2018 Badminton Asia Team Championships. He is currently ranked #1 in the BWF world ranking for the men’s doubles.

For Marcus, the real battle begins outside the arena on the streets of his home town in Jakarta where he is fighting against road hazards and bad driving behaviour.

Nguyen Thanh Trung, Vietnam

Starting out as a fisherman who had to swim just to earn a livelihood for his family, Trung has come a long way. He has now won more than 40 medals in his career, including three golds at the 2011 ASEAN Para Games.

At the 2018 Asian Para Games, he not only won the 100m breaststroke but smashed his previous best in the process.

Swimming wasn't always about trying to win races. When Trung was young, he had to work dangerous jobs setting fishing nets and loosening sand on river bottoms. But his passion for singing and breakdancing got him through.

Now, he uses swimming and dancing to help inspire and empower other disadvantaged youths, and he frequently organises and takes part in community events. He knows as we at Toyota do, that the greatest champions are those who create positive change in the world.

Ni Nengah Widiasih, Indonesia

At just 14 years old, Ni Nengah started weightlifting with the most basic equipment available to her. Her first major success came in 2008 when she won bronze at the ASEAN Para Games.

She has since gone on to win gold at the 2011 ASEAN Para Games, silver at the 2014 Asian Para Games, and bronze at the Paralympic Games Rio 2016.

Making it to the Paralympic Games was an arduous journey for Ni Nengah. At just 3, she was diagnosed with polio and at 11, she was separated from her family when she had to live in a special care facility for disabled children.

Like a true champion, she was not going to let the impossible stand in her way. She is now aiming, together with Toyota, to pave the way for the disabled and improve accessibility in Indonesia.

Panipak Wongpattanakit, Thailand

HER STORY

Date of birth: 8 August 1997

Sport: Taekwondo

Although her sports-loving family gave her the nickname “Tennis”, Panipak chose a taekwondo dobok over a racket. It was a wise choice, as she has been collecting many accolades as a taekwondo champion throughout her career.

With a gold medal at both the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and the 2017 U.S. Open Taekwondo Championships, Panipak has cemented her place in Thailand as one of their finest athletes.

It has not been an easy journey for Panipak. When she was 7 years old, she lost her mother in a car accident and her father had to single-handedly raise three children. Her father recognised the positive impact that sports could make and encouraged her to take up taekwondo.

Now, together with Toyota, Panipak brings change to her community by helping orphans and underprivileged children in Thailand. She sees it as a way of giving back to the country that supported her through thick and thin.

As a huge Bruce Lee fan, Saadi’s father inspired him to take up martial arts. And even though the promising young champion often had to train alone to try and achieve his goal of becoming a legend, he persevered. The years of hard work paid off when Saadi won a silver at the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.

He is also the first-ever South Asian to win a gold medal at the Asian Karate Championships.

Saadi has always believed that society is shaped by its youth. That's why he dedicates himself to training the poor and marginalised youth in his community.

He knows how tough it can be to walk through life alone and has made it his mission to guide, motivate, and empower others through participation in sports.
